COME MAKAN WITH US: Who knew you could savour authentic (Halal) Indonesian and Chinese dishes in Montigo Resorts Batam?

Montigo Resorts is now no stranger to Singaporeans who are looking for a short getaway without the flight. This popular 5-star resort is known for the luxurious 2, 3 and 4 bedroom villas featuring a private pool. Yes, that means you don't have to get out of your villa for a swim!

We had the chance to visit Montigo Resorts last week and indulge ourselves in the food served at the two in-house restaurants, TADD'S and Pantai

TADD'S Restaurant serves local, Asian and Western all-day dining in a casual semi-alfresco poolside setting. Here you can find local favourites such as Traditional Gado Gado Salad and Nasi Goreng Kampung.

The best thing we had was the Rijsttafel Set (IDR 350.000 ~ S$35)a colourful wheel of Indonesia's favourite dishes! Serve with yellow or white rice, this set meal is good for 3 people if you're not a big eater. Taste wise, it lived up to our expectations and what's great is that you get to taste a bit of everything!

The wheel consists of Mixed Vegetables on Coconut Gravy, Spicy Tiger Prawn, Wok-fry Squid Chilli Lime Soya Sauce, Grilled Fillet of Snapper Green and Red Chilli Sambal, Chicken Stew on Coconut Yellow Broth, Beef Stew 'Batavia' Style and Sweet Corn Fritters.

We paired the meal with a coconut drink (IDR 60.000 ~ S$6) to wash down the robust flavours, ending the gratifying meal.

Desserts

We were spoilt for choices!

TADD'S Warm Apple Tart (IDR 55.000 ~ S$5.50) was baked with granny smith apples, giving it a sour (in a good way!) flavour which compliments the rich spread of vanilla sauce.

The Coconut Crème Brûlée (IDR 35.000 ~ S$3.50) was good albeit the very subtle taste of coconut. The burnt sugar did not give the satisfying crunch we expected.

The Sago Malacca (IDR 55.000 ~ S$5.50) feels interesting in your mouth! The sago is sandwiched in between two biscuits and topped with a dollop of vanilla ice cream. The crème anglaise is infused with palm sugar.

This huge ball of pastry goodness is the Deep-fried Ice Cream (IDR 35.000 ~ S$3.50). The dessert feels both cold and warm in your mouth, from the ice cream and the pastry. The pastry itself might have been too much, we didn't finish it (or we were too stuffed 🙊).

For dinner, we headed to Pantai Restaurant.

Pantai Restaurant is a kelong-style restaurant that offers restaurant Indonesian and Chinese delights featuring seafood.

We were greeted by friendly waiters and was soon served.

The appetiser was crunchy Green Papaya Salad with Shrimp (IDR 65.000 ~ S$6.50 for small, IDR 100.000 ~ S$10 for large). It tastes similar to the usual Thai mango salad we've had before.

We were also served soup, which was the Vegetable Soup with Black Fungus (IDR 80.000 ~ S$8 for small, IDR 130.000 ~ S$13). We were taken aback by the colour of the soup, but it was ridiculously good! It has the same consistency of a shark fin's soup.

We had Steamed Garoupa Indonesian Nyonya Style (IDR market price) as part of our main course. The fish was really soft and literally melts in your mouth, coated with the sweet and sour flavour of the sauce.

The most interesting dish that we had was Chicken Fire and Ice, a sweet and sour crispy and tender chicken on a bed of ice. Similar to the garoupa, it melts in your mouth too! This was by far our favourite!

The Prawn Golden Sand (IDR 145.000 ~ S$14.50 for small, IDR 245.000 ~ S$24.50 for large), is our Singaporean favourite dish, the Cereal Prawn.

The Deep-fried Cuttlefish with Garlic, Chilli and Salt (IDR 75.000 ~ S$7.50 for small, IDR 115.000 ~ S$11.50 for large) is a nice crunchy touch amongst our main courses.

A dinner won't be complete without some vegetables -- Broccoli with Garlic and Scallop (IDR 90.000 ~ S$9 for small, IDR 125.000 ~ S$12.50 for large). The scallop was well cooked and tender.
