Winner of the National Day quiz on 2 August 2017

Last Wednesday, we held a giveaway in conjunction with National Day. We asked you:

Here are the correct answers to the questions:

1️⃣ There are 10 public holidays in Singapore! They are New Year's Day, Chinese New Year, Good Friday, Labour Day, Vesak Day, Hari Raya Puasa, National Day, Hari Raya Haji, Deepavali and Christmas Day.

Apparently, many of the answers we received forgot National Day as one of our public holidays 😂

️2️⃣️ Vanda Miss Joaquim (an Orchid) was cross-bred by Agnes Joaqium, an Armenian avid gardener and horticulturist who resided in Singapore in the late 1800s. Agnes Joaquim spearheaded the cut-flower industry. The orchid made its maiden public appearance in Singapore at the annual Flower Show in April 1899 and won Joaquim the first prize for the rarest orchid.

3️⃣️ Marina Square was previously known for the long flight of stairs that has now been demolished. Still remember those days you'd sit there and watch the fireworks during National Day?

4️⃣️ According to National Library records, in the 1960s, an Englishman asked a Malay hawker in Sembawang for a hamburger. As hamburgers were not available, the ingenious hawker spread minced mutton and onions between slices of French loaf and fried the concoction in an egg as a substitute. The name for the dish is also attributed to this anonymous hawker, who was overheard saying to the customer, “Silakan makan roti, John”, which literally translates as “Please eat this bread, John”, but can also be understood as “Please eat this dish, John’s bread.

Of course, we weren't looking for copy-paste answers, but of something along those lines.

Thus, we had to pick one out of the many correct answers we received. And the winner is...
